in those days they recognized goblins as ‘blackboys’. They said: ‘He spoke as soon as he was born—a blackboy is born! A goblin is born!’ From that day on the Kaṇhāyanas were proclaimed, and he was their founder. When he said this, those young students said to him, “Worthy Gotama, please don’t put Ambaṭṭha down too much by calling him the son of a slavegirl. 「その頃、人々は鬼神（ピサーチャ）を『黒子（カンハ）』と呼んでいた。そして彼らはこう言った。『この者は生まれながらにして言葉を発した。黒子が生まれた、鬼神が生まれた』と。アンバッタよ、その時より以来、カンハーヤナ族の名が知られるようになり、かの者こそがカンハーヤナ族の始祖となったのである」
こう仰せになると、若い学徒たちは世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「ゴータマ尊者よ、どうかアンバッタを、奴隷女の子と仰せになることで、あまりにも激しく辱めることのなきようお願い申し上げます。アンバッタ青年は良い家柄の出であり、良家の子弟であり、広く学を修めた者であり、言葉を巧みに操る者であり、また智慧（パンニャー）ある者でございます。彼はゴータマ尊者とこの問題について論議を交わすことのできる器量を備えております」
