That’s how a Jain ascetic is restrained in the fourfold constraint. 「大王よ、このようにして、ニガンタ（尼乾陀）は四重の制戒（チャートゥヤーマ・サンヴァラ）によって自らを律しております。大王よ、ニガンタがかくのごとく四重の制戒によって自らを律するとき、その者は『結縛（けつばく）を脱し、自己を証得し（ガタッタ）、自己を調御し（ヤタッタ）、自己において安立せる者（ティタッタ）』と呼ばれるのであります。」
また、他のある大臣が、マガダ国の王アジャータサットゥ（阿闍世）・ヴェーデーヒープッタに申し上げた。
「大王よ、かのマッカリ・ゴーサーラは、教団を率い、衆（しゅ）を率い、衆の師となっております。その名は広く知られ、声望高く、開祖として多くの人々より聖者と仰がれております。久しく世に在り、久しく出家し、齢すでに老境に達しております。どうか大王よ、マッカリ・ゴーサーラのもとに参じてご親交を結ばれますならば、あるいは大王にとりましても——」
