The Realized One understands this … And those who genuinely praise the Realized One would rightly speak of these things. These are the eighteen grounds on which those ascetics and brahmins who theorize about the first beginning assert various hypotheses concerning the first beginning. Any ascetics and brahmins who theorize about the first beginning do so on one or other of these eighteen grounds. Outside of this there is none. 如来（にょらい）はこれを知る……そして、如来を真実のままに称讃する者たちは、まさにこれらのことを正しく語るであろう。
比丘たちよ、前際（ぜんざい）について思いめぐらし、前際について見解を抱き、前際に関して種々の臆説（おくせつ）の立場を唱える沙門・婆羅門たちは、これら十八の事由によってそれを唱えるのである。およそ前際について思いめぐらし、前際について見解を抱き、前際に関して種々の臆説の立場を唱える沙門・婆羅門は、いかなる者であれ、すべてこれら十八の事由によるか、あるいはそのいずれかによるのであって、これらの外にはいかなるものも存在しない。
比丘たちよ、如来はこれを知る。「もし人がこれらの見解（けんかい）に執著（しゅうじゃく）し、これに固執するならば——」
