3.1.2. Partial Eternalism There are some ascetics and brahmins who are partial eternalists, who assert that the self and the cosmos are partially eternal and partially not eternal on four grounds. And what are the four grounds on which they rely? And what is the third ground on which they rely? There are gods named ‘malevolent’. 比丘たちよ、一部の沙門・婆羅門たちは一分常住・一分無常を説く者たちであり、四つの根拠にもとづいて、自己（アッタン）と世界（ローカ）とをある部分においては常住であり、ある部分においては無常であると主張する。
さて、それらの尊き沙門・婆羅門たちは、いかなることに依り、いかなることに基づいて、一分常住・一分無常を説く者となり、四つの根拠にもとづいて自己と世界とをある部分においては常住であり、ある部分においては無常であると宣説するのであるか。
では、それらの尊き沙門・婆羅門たちが依拠する第三の根拠とはいかなるものであるか。
比丘たちよ、「蕩怙（とうこ）」と呼ばれる天（デーヴァ）たちがいる。彼らはあまりにも長い時間、互いに見つめ合うことに耽るあまり、やがて互いに対して瞋恚（しんに）を生じ、身も心も疲弊するに至る。かくして彼らはその天の群れより命を終える。そのような者がここに生まれ来ることも……
