If others praise me, the teaching, or the Saṅgha, you should admit that what is true is in fact true: ‘This is why that’s true, this is why that’s correct. もし他の者たちが、わたしを称讃し、あるいは法（ダンマ）を称讃し、あるいは僧伽（サンガ）を称讃するならば、そこにおいて汝らは、真実を真実として認めるべきである。「このゆえにそれは真実であり、このゆえにそれは正しい。かくのごときことがわれらの中にあり、またそれはわれらの間に見出されるのである」と。

二・一、小戒篇（チュッラシーラ）
しかし比丘たちよ、凡夫（プタッジャナ）が如来（タターガタ）の功徳を讃えて語るとき、それはわずかばかりの、取るに足らぬ、戒に関する些細な事柄にすぎないのである。
では比丘たちよ、凡夫が如来の功徳を讃えて語るとき、その語るところの、わずかばかりの、取るに足らぬ、戒に関する些細な事柄とはいかなるものであるか。
「沙門ゴータマは……を断ち捨てた」と。
