There are ascetics and brahmins who are free of greed, hate, and delusion for sounds known by the ear … smells known by the nose … If wanderers of other religions were to ask you: ‘But what reasons and evidence do you have regarding those venerables that justifies saying, “Clearly those venerables are free of greed, hate, and delusion, or practicing to be free of them”?’ You should answer them: ‘It’s because those venerables frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. 耳によって識られる声に対して……鼻によって識られる香りに対して……貪り（ラーガ）と、怒り（ドーサ）と、迷妄（モーハ）を離れた沙門・婆羅門たちがいる……
もし、居士たちよ、他の宗派の遊行者たちが汝らに向かってこう問うたとせよ。
「いったい汝らの尊者がたは、いかなる根拠と証拠をもって、『されば彼の尊者がたは、貪りを離れ、もしくは貪りを除くことを修し、怒りを離れ、もしくは怒りを除くことを修し、迷妄を離れ、もしくは迷妄を除くことを修しておられる』と、そのように語るのか」と。
居士たちよ、かく問われたならば、汝らはそれら他の宗派の遊行者たちに対して、次のように答えるべきである。
「それはかくのごとし。彼の尊者がたは、遠離の地、林野の辺境の住処に親しみ赴かれるのである。かかる場所においては……」
