Why is that? Because we ourselves are not free of these things, but we see that they have a higher good conduct than us. That’s why they deserve honor, respect, reverence, and veneration. それはなぜか。われわれ自身もまた、これらのことがら（貪・瞋・痴）を離れておらず、内なる心（ajjhattaṁ）は静まっておらず、身・口・意において均しからぬ行いをしているからである。彼らはわれわれよりもすぐれた行いを持つと見られるゆえに、まさにそのことを理由として、彼らは尊敬され、礼重され、崇められ、供養されるに値するのである、と。
居士（がはじ）たちよ、異学（aññatitthiya）の遊行者たちにこのように問われたならば、汝らはかくのごとく答えるがよい。
「居士たちよ、いかなる沙門・婆羅門（samaṇabrāhmaṇā）が、尊敬され、礼重され、崇められ、供養されるに値するのか」と問われたならば、汝らはかくのごとく答えるがよい。「眼によって識られる諸々の事物に対して貪（rāga）を離れ、瞋（dosa）を離れ、痴（moha）を離れ、心の静けさ（vūpasanta）を得たる沙門・婆羅門こそ、尊敬され、礼重され、崇められ、供養されるに値するのである」と。
