‘There are ascetics and brahmins who are not free of greed, hate, and delusion for sights known by the eye, who are not peaceful inside, and who conduct themselves badly among the good by way of body, speech, and mind. They don’t deserve honor, respect, reverence, and veneration. Why is that? Because we ourselves are not free of these things, so we do not see that they have any higher good conduct than us. 「眼（まなこ）によって識られる諸々の色（しき）に対して、貪（とん）を離れず、瞋（じん）を離れず、癡（ち）を離れず、内に心の静まりなく、身・口・意（しん・く・い）の三業（さんごう）において善人のなかにあって不善を行ずる——そのような沙門・婆羅門は、敬重されるべきでなく、尊重されるべきでなく、崇められるべきでなく、供養されるべきでない。それはなぜか。われわれ自身もまた、眼によって識られる諸々の色に対して、貪を離れず、瞋を離れず、癡を離れず、内に心の静まりなく、身・口・意の三業において不善を行じている。われわれには、かの者たちがわれわれよりも優れた行いを有するとは見えない。それゆえに、かの尊き沙門・婆羅門は、敬重されるべきでなく、尊重されるべきでなく、崇められるべきでなく、供養されるべきでない。
