中部経典（MN148 §41.6–5.6）
Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When it is freed, they know it is freed. They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’” That is what the Buddha said. 厭離（えんり）することによって、欲（よく）は色あせる。欲が色あせることによって、解脱（げだつ）する。解脱したとき、「解脱した」という智（ち）が生じる。そして「生（しょう）は尽きた、梵行（ぼんぎょう）はすでに完成した、なすべきことはなし終えた、もはやこのような状態に戻ることはない」と、如実に知るのである。」
世尊はこのように説かれた。比丘（びく）たちは満足して、世尊の説かれたことを歓喜した。
「六つの外なる処（しょ）は知られるべきである」——かくのごとく説かれた。では、いかなる縁によってそのように説かれたのか。色処（しきしょ）、声処（しょうしょ）、香処（こうしょ）、味処（みしょ）、触処（そくしょ）、法処（ほっしょ）——これらがあるゆえに、「六つの外なる処は知られるべきである」とかく説かれたのである。
