“Good, good, sisters! That’s how it is for a noble disciple who truly sees with right wisdom. Now, suppose someone was to say: ‘There’s a large tree standing with heartwood. The roots, trunk, and branches and leaves are all impermanent and perishable. But the shadow is permanent, lasting, eternal, and imperishable.’ Would they be speaking rightly?” “No, sir. Why is that? Because that large tree’s roots, trunk, and branches and leaves are all impermanent and perishable, let alone the shadow.” “In
「よきかな、よきかな、姉妹たちよ。まさにそのように、姉妹たちよ、如実に正しき智慧（sammā-paññā）をもって見る聖なる弟子（ariya-sāvaka）にとっては、そうあるものなのです。さて、姉妹たちよ、もし誰かがこのように言ったとしましょう——『あの大きな木が、心材（sāra）をそなえて立っている。その根も無常（anicca）にして変滅（vipariṇāma）の法であり、幹も無常にして変滅の法であり、枝葉もまた無常にして変滅の法である。しかるに、その木の影は常住（nicca）にして堅固（dhuva）であり、永遠（sassata）にして変滅せざるものである』と。姉妹たちよ、このように語る者は、正しく語っていると言えるでしょうか」と。「いいえ、尊き師よ、そうは言えません」。「それはいかなる理由によるのですか」。「尊き師よ、あの大きな木が、心材をそなえて立っている以上、その根も幹も枝葉もすべて無常にして変滅の法であります。まして影においてをや」。「然り——
