「スナーパランタの人々は善良な方々です。まことに善良な方々です。なぜなら、彼らは鋭い刃物でわたくしの命を奪おうとはしないのですから。」世尊よ、わたくしはそのように思うことでしょう。善逝（スガタ）よ、わたくしはそのように思うことでしょう。」
「プンナよ、スナーパランタの人々は荒々しく粗暴である。しかしプンナよ、もし彼らが鋭い刃物でそなたの命を奪うならば、そのときそなたはどのように思うであろうか。」
「尊師よ、もしスナーパランタの人々が鋭い刃物でわたくしの命を奪うならば、そのときわたくしはこのように思うことでしょう。『世尊の弟子たちの中には、この身体と生命（いのち）を厭い、嫌悪し、遠離しようと求めて、自ら死を求める手立てを探し求めた者たちがいる。
