「マハーカッチャーナ尊者は、世尊が簡略に示されたこの教説の意味を、詳しく分別して説き明かす力をお持ちである。さあ、われわれはマハーカッチャーナ尊者のもとへ参り、この義（アッタ）についてお尋ねしようではないか。」
そこでかの比丘たちは、マハーカッチャーナ尊者のもとへと赴いた。赴いて、マハーカッチャーナ尊者と挨拶を交わし、喜ばしく記念すべき言葉（sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ）を語り合ったのち、一方の側に坐した。
一方の側に坐した比丘たちは、かくかくしかじかのことを申し述べ、こうお願いした。
「マハーカッチャーナ尊者よ、どうか詳しくお説き明かしくださいませ。」
