Driven by a horse trainer, a horse in training proceeds in just one direction: east, west, north, or south. Driven by an ox trainer, an ox in training proceeds in just one direction: east, west, north, or south. 比丘たちよ、馬を調教する者に導かれた調教中の馬は、ただ一つの方角のみを走る――東へ、あるいは西へ、あるいは北へ、あるいは南へ。比丘たちよ、牛を調教する者に導かれた調教中の牛もまた、ただ一つの方角のみを走る――東へ、あるいは西へ、あるいは北へ、あるいは南へ。しかるに比丘たちよ、如来（タターガタ）にして、阿羅漢（アラハント）にして、正しく完全に覚られた目覚めし者に導かれた修行中の人は、八つの方角を駆け巡るのである。
――色（ルーパ）を有する者として諸々の形（色）を見る。これが第五の方角である。
――識無辺処（ヴィンニャーナンチャーヤタナ）をことごとく超えて、「何ものも存在しない」と知りつつ、無所有処（アーキンチャンニャーヤタナ）に入って住する。これが第六の方角である。
