「わたくしは、尊者ゴータマが略して説かれたことの意味を、詳しく解き明かしていただかなければ、理解することができません。どうか尊者ゴータマよ、わたくしがその意味を理解できますよう、詳しくお説きくださいますように。」
「それならば、学び人よ、よく聞いて、心にしっかりと留めなさい。わたしは説くであろう。」
「はい、尊者よ」と、トーデーヤの子なるスッバ（Subha）青年は世尊にお答えした。
世尊はこのように仰せられた——
「学び人よ、ここに、ある女性あるいは男性が、生きとし生けるものを殺す者（pāṇātipātī）であるとしよう。かれは粗暴にして、血に手を染め、殺すことに慣れ果て、あらゆる生けるものに対してあわれみの心を持たない。そのような行ない（業・カンマ）を積み重ねることによって、その身が滅した後には——
