世尊が去られてほどなく、比丘たちの間にこのような思いが起こった。「いったい誰が、世尊によって略説（サンキッタ）として示されたこの法門の意義を、詳しく分別して説き明かすことができるであろうか」と。「世尊はこの略説を示されたのち、その意義を詳しく分別されることなく、座より立って精舎へと入られてしまった。……」
そこで比丘たちに、またこのような思いが起こった。「この尊者マハーカッチャーナは、師（世尊）によって讃嘆され、賢明なる梵行の友（サブラフマチャーリン）たちからも尊重されておられる。尊者マハーカッチャーナには、世尊によって略説として示されたこの法門の意義を、詳しく分別して説き明かす力がおありである。さあ、われらは尊者のもとへ赴こう」と。
