「このようにして、比丘たちよ、過去へと引き返すことがないのである。
では、比丘たちよ、いかにして未来を待ち望む（paṭikaṅkhati）のか。『未来の世において、このような色（rūpa）を持つものとなれかし』と、そこに喜び（nandi）を呼び起こす。『このような受（vedanā）を持つものとなれかし……このような想（saññā）を持つものとなれかし……このような行（saṅkhāra）を持つものとなれかし……このような識（viññāṇa）を持つものとなれかし』と、未来の世においてそこに喜びを呼び起こす。比丘たちよ、このようにして未来を待ち望むのである。
では、比丘たちよ、いかにして未来を待ち望まない（nappaṭikaṅkhati）のか。『未来の世において、このような色を持つものとなれかし』と思いながらも、そこに喜びを呼び起こさない。『このような受を持つものとなれかし……このような想を持つものとなれかし……このような行を持つものとなれかし……このような識を持つものとなれかし』と思いながらも、そこに喜びを呼び起こさない。比丘たちよ、このようにして未来を待ち望まないのである。」
