‘My friend, because you were negligent, you didn’t do good by way of body, speech, and mind. Well, they’ll definitely punish you to fit your negligence. That bad deed wasn’t done by your mother, father, brother, or sister. It wasn’t done by friends and colleagues, by relatives and kin, by ascetics and brahmins, or by the deities. 「汝よ、汝は放逸（pamāda）のゆえに、身（kāya）と口（vācā）と意（manas）とによって善をなさなかった。されば彼らは必ずや、放逸なる汝にふさわしき報いを与えるであろう。その悪業（pāpakamma）は、汝の母がなしたのでもなく、父がなしたのでもなく、兄弟がなしたのでもなく、姉妹がなしたのでもない。友人や同僚がなしたのでもなく、親族や血縁の者がなしたのでもなく、沙門（samaṇa）や婆羅門（brāhmaṇa）がなしたのでもなく、神々（devatā）がなしたのでもない。この悪業はただ汝ひとりがなしたのであり、その果報（vipāka）をまた汝ひとりが受けることになるであろう。」
「汝よ、汝は人々のあいだに現れた、神々の第五の使者（devadūta）を見なかったのか。」
その者はこのように答えた。「尊き方よ、見ませんでした。」
