That bad deed wasn’t done by your mother, father, brother, or sister. It wasn’t done by friends and colleagues, by relatives and kin, by ascetics and brahmins, or by the deities. 「その悪しき業（ごう）は、汝の母が行いしにあらず、父が行いしにあらず、兄弟が行いしにあらず、姉妹が行いしにあらず、友人や同僚が行いしにあらず、親族や血縁の者たちが行いしにあらず、沙門（さもん）や婆羅門（ばらもん）たちが行いしにあらず、また神々が行いしにあらず。その悪しき業は、汝みずからが行いしものである。ゆえに汝みずからが、その果報（かほう）を受けることとなるであろう。」
「やあ、そこな者よ。人間たちの中に現れた、第二の天の使者（てんのししゃ）を、汝は見なかったか。」
彼はこう答える。「見ませんでした、尊き方よ。」
比丘（びく）たちよ、ヤマ王はその者にこう告げるのである。「やあ、そこな者よ。人間たちの中に、八十歳、あるいは九十歳にもなり、腰は曲がり、老い衰えたる女や男を、汝は見なかったか——」
