‘Those who do such bad deeds in the world receive these many different punishments. Oh, I hope I may be reborn as a human being! And that a Realized One—a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha—arises in the world! And that I may pay homage to the Buddha! 「この世において悪しき不善の業（カルマ）を為す者たちは、かくのごとき様々な業の報いを受けるのである。ああ、願わくは、我ふたたび人間として生まれることを得んことを。そして如来（タターガタ）——阿羅漢（アラハン）にして正等覚者（サンマーサンブッダ）——がこの世に出現されんことを。そして我がその世尊（バガヴァント）に親しく仕え奉らんことを。かの世尊が我に法（ダンマ）を説いてくださらんことを。そして我が世尊の法を正しく了解し得んことを』と。
比丘たちよ、我はこのことを、他の何らかの沙門（サマナ）あるいは婆羅門（バラモン）から聞いて語るのではない。ただ我自ら知り、我自ら見、我自ら証したることのみを、我は語るのである。」
比丘たちよ、地獄の獄卒（ニラヤパーラ）たちは彼をとらえ、その両腕をつかんで——
