Such families are poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find. And they’d be ugly, unsightly, deformed, sickly—one-eyed, crippled, lame, or half-paralyzed. They don’t get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; or bed, house, and lighting. And they do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. そのような家は貧しく、飲食にも事欠き、暮らしは困窮を極め、食料と住処を得ることさえ難しい境遇にある。そしてその者は、醜く見苦しい姿形に生まれ、身体は歪み、病にさいなまれる——片目であるか、手足が不自由であるか、腰が曲がっているか、あるいは半身が萎えているかのいずれかである。食物も、飲み物も、衣服も、乗り物も、花飾りも、香りも、塗香（ずこう）も、臥具（がぐ）も、住まいも、灯明（とうみょう）も、何一つ得ることができない。そしてその者は、身（しん）をもって悪しき行いをなし、口（く）をもって悪しき言葉を語り、意（い）をもって悪しき思いをいだく。身・口・意の三業（さんごう）において悪行を重ねた果てに、身体が滅び、死を迎えた後、苦しみに満ちた悪しき境涯（きょうがい）、すなわち堕処（だしょ）・悪趣（あくしゅ）・奈落（ならく）・地獄（じごく）に生まれ落ちるのである。
