獄卒（ごくそつ）たちは彼らを逆さまに吊り上げ、手斧（ておの）をもってその身を削り刻む。……獄卒たちは彼らを車に繋ぎ、燃え盛り、赤々と輝く灼熱の大地を、前へ後ろへと引き廻す。……獄卒たちは彼らを、燃え盛り、赤々と輝く巨大な炭火の山へと、幾度も登らせ、幾度も降ろす。……獄卒たちは彼らを逆さまに捉えて、燃え盛り、赤々と輝く灼熱の銅の釜（ろうかんび）の中へと投げ込む。彼らはそこにて沸き立つ泡沫（ほうまつ）の中で煮られながら、あるときは上へと浮き、あるときは下へと沈み、あるいは渦を巻きながら流される。かくして彼らはそこに、激烈にして鋭く、深く重い苦（く）を受けるのである。
