「われわれはその根拠をまだ見極めておりません。」「アヌルッダよ、汝らはその根拠を見極めねばならぬ。アヌルッダよ、わたしもまた、かつて正覚（sammābodhi）を得る以前、いまだ覚りを開かず、ただ菩提（bodhi）を求める菩薩（bodhisatta）であったとき、光明（obhāsa）を知覚し、また諸々の色形（rūpa）を見ることができた。しかるに、その光明と色形の所見とは、ほどなくして消え失せてしまった。そこでわたしにこのような思いが起こった。『いかなる因（hetu）、いかなる縁（paccaya）によりて、わが光明と色形の所見とは消え失せるのであろうか』と。アヌルッダよ、やがてわたしにこのような思いが起こった。『わが心に疑惑（vicikicchā）が生じた。その疑惑のゆえに三昧（samādhi）が退き失せた。三昧の退き失せたるとき、光明もまた消え、色形を見ることもまた消え失せるのである』と。」
