If you don’t make a wish and lead the spiritual life, you can’t win the fruit. If you both make a wish and don’t make a wish and lead the spiritual life, you can’t win the fruit. 「もし願いを起こさずして梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修めるならば、果（か）を証得することはできない。もし願いを起こしつつ、かつ願いを起こさずして梵行を修めるならば、果を証得することはできない。もし願いを起こすのでもなく、願いを起こさないのでもなく梵行を修めるならば、果を証得することはできない』と。王子よ、ここにおいて、ブーミジャ尊者の師はいかなることを説き、いかなることを宣示しておられるのでありましょうか。」
「王子よ、わたくしはかかることを、世尊のみ前において直接お聞きし、直接受け持ったわけではございません。しかしながら、『願いを起こすのでもなく、願いを起こさないのでもなく、理にかなった仕方（よにそまなしかる）をもって梵行を修めるならば、果を証得することができる』と。王子よ、このことをわたくしは、世尊のみ前において直接お聞きしたわけでは……」
