When he had spoken, Jayasena said to him, “It is impossible, worthy Aggivessana, it cannot happen that a mendicant who meditates diligently, keenly, and resolutely can experience unification of mind.” Having declared that this was impossible, Jayasena got up from his seat and left. Not long after he had left, Aciravata went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and informed the Buddha of all they had discussed. When he had spoken, the Buddha said to him, “How could it possibly be otherwise
かくのごとく語り終えると、王子ジャヤセーナはアチラヴァタ沙弥（さみ）にこう告げた。
「尊者アッギヴェッサナよ、それはあり得ぬことです。不放逸（ふほういつ）に、熱心に、精励して住する比丘が、心の一境性（いっきょうせい）を体得するなどということは、およそ起こり得ないことであります。」
かくしてジャヤセーナ王子は、その不可能なることを言い渡すと、座より立ち上がり、去っていった。
ジャヤセーナ王子が去ってほどなく、アチラヴァタ沙弥は世尊のもとへと赴いた。世尊に近づき、礼拝して、一方に坐した。一方に坐したアチラヴァタ沙弥は、かの王子との間に交わされた一切のことを世尊に申し上げた。
語り終えると、世尊はかれにこう仰せられた。
「アチラヴァタよ、どうして、それが他のことであり得ようか――」
