そこに座して、世尊は比丘たちに告げられた。「比丘たちよ、汝らはいま何を語り合っておったのか。いかなる話が途中のままになっておるのか。」
比丘たちは、かれらが語り合っていたことを世尊に申し上げた。すると仏陀は仰せになった。「それならば、アーナンダよ、如来（タターガタ）の不可思議にして希有なる徳について、さらに語るがよい。」
「友よ、まことに不可思議なることかな、まことに希有なることかな。如来はかくも大いなる神通力（イッディ）と大いなる威神力（アヌバーヴァ）をそなえておられる。なんとなれば、如来は、過去において完全な涅槃（パリニッバーナ）に入り、戯論（パパンチャ）を断ち切られた過去の諸仏を……」
