and wondered, “Many resting places have been spread out; are there many mendicants living here?” Now at that time Venerable Ānanda, together with many other mendicants, was making robes at the lodge of the Sakyan Ghaṭā. 世尊はご覧になって、このようにお思いになった。「多くの臥坐具（がざぐ）が敷き設けられている。ここには多くの比丘たちが住んでいるのであろうか」と。
そのとき、尊者アーナンダは、多くの比丘たちとともに、釈族ガター（Ghaṭā）の精舎において衣（ころも）の縫製にいそしんでいた。
やがて世尊は、夕暮れどき、独坐瞑想（パティサッラーナ）より出られ、ガターの精舎へと赴かれた。赴かれて、設けられた座にお就きになった。
「アーナンダよ、弟子たる者は、師に従うことを、経（スッタ）・応頌（ゲッヤ）・論議（ヴェッヤーカラナ）のためにこそ値するとは思うべきではない。それはいかなるゆえか。なぜならば——」
