Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, nikkhaṁ jambonadaṁ dakkhakammāraputtaukkāmukhasukusalasampahaṭṭhaṁ paṇḍukambale nikkhittaṁ bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca; Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena … Tassa sutaṁ hoti— ābhā devā …pe… parittābhā devā … appamāṇābhā devā … ābhassarā devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulāti. “saṅkhārupapattiṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti. “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

Suppose there was a pendant of Black Plum River gold, fashioned by a deft smith, well wrought in the forge. When placed on a cream rug it would shine and glow and radiate. Furthermore, take a mendicant who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. 比丘たちよ、たとえばジャンブー河（閻浮川）の黄金の首飾りが、熟練した鍛冶師の子によって炉の中で巧みに鍛え上げられ、淡黄色の毛氈（もうせん）の上に置かれたとき、それは輝き、燃え、光を放つであろう。さらにまた、比丘たちよ、ある比丘が信（サッダー）を具え、戒（シーラ）を具え、聞（スータ）を具え、布施（ダーナ）を具え、慧（パンニャー）を具えているとする。そして彼はこのように聞いたことがある。「光明天（アーバー・デーヴァー）の神々は、命長く、容色美しく、安楽に満ちている。また、光明小天（パリッタービハー・デーヴァー）の神々も……光明無量天（アッパマーナービハー・デーヴァー）の神々も……光音天（アーバッサラー・デーヴァー）の神々もまた、命長く、容色美しく、安楽に満ちている」と。「比丘たちよ、我は汝らに意欲による再生（サンカーラウパパッティ）について説くであろう。よく聴いて、心に留めよ。我は語るであろう。」「然り、世尊よ」と、かの比丘たちは世尊にお答え申し上げた。
