And each of these is a kind of mental behavior.’ That’s what the Buddha said, but why did he say it? 「これらはすべて、それぞれ意業（いごう）の一種である」——これは世尊が説かれた御言葉である。では、何ゆえにこのように説かれたのであろうか。
いかなる意業（マノサマーチャーラ）を修習するならば、不善の諸法（あくぜんのしょほう）が増大し、善の諸法が衰退するか——かくなる意業は、修習すべきではない。いかなる意業を修習するならば、不善の諸法が衰退し、善の諸法が増大するか——かくなる意業こそ、修習すべきである。
では尊者よ、いかなる意業を修習するならば、不善の諸法が増大し、善の諸法が衰退するのであろうか。
ここに、ある者は貪欲（とんよく）の心あり、他者の財物や功徳を羨み求める。
