中部経典（MN114 §6.18–6.5）
They give up talking nonsense. Their words are timely, true, and meaningful, in line with the teaching and training. They say things at the right time which are valuable, reasonable, succinct, and beneficial. 彼は無益な雑言（samphappalāpa）を捨て、雑言を離れて住む。言葉を発するにあたっては、時に適い、真実にして意義深く、法（dhamma）にかない、律（vinaya）にかなったことを語る。宝蔵のごとき言葉を、折にふれ、道理を具え、節度をもち、利益をともなうものとして語る。
このような口の行い（vacīsamācāra）を実践する者においては、不善の法（akusalā dhammā）は衰退し、善の法（kusalā dhammā）はますます増大する。
「比丘たちよ、わたしは口の行いに二種あると説く。修すべきものと、修すべからざるものとである。しかして、その口の行いもまた互いに異なるものである。」
世尊がかく説かれたのは、まさにこのことに基づいてのことである。
