I gave up divisive speech. I didn’t repeat in one place what I heard in another so as to divide people against each other. Instead, I reconciled those who are divided and support those who are united, delighting in harmony, loving harmony, speaking words that promote harmony. I gave up harsh speech. 私は両舌（りょうぜつ）を捨て、離間の言葉を慎んだ。ここで聞いたことをかしこで告げ口して人々を引き裂くようなことはしなかった。むしろ、争い別れた者たちを和合させ、すでに睦み合う者たちを支え励ました。和合（わごう）を喜びとし、和合を楽しみとし、和合を愛でながら、和合をもたらす言葉を語ったのである。
私は粗悪な言葉（麁言・そごん）を捨て、荒々しき語りを慎んだ。語るときには、穏やかで耳に心地よく、愛すべく、胸に沁み入り、礼節があり、多くの人に親しまれ、多くの人に喜ばれるような、そのような言葉のみを語ったのである。
私は綺語（きご）を捨て、無益なる言葉の遊びを慎んだ。語る言葉はつねに時にかない、真実にかない、意義にかなうものであった。
