「さらに一時ほど進めば、ラージャガハ（王舎城）が見えてくるでしょう。そこには趣ある園林（ārama）があり、森があり、草原があり、蓮池があります」と。このようにあなたから教え諭されながらも、その人はなお誤った道を取り、西の方へと歩んでしまうかもしれません。ところが、同じ問いを抱いて別の人がやって来たとしましょう。その人もまったく同じように教え諭されるのです。バラモンよ、あなたはどのようにお考えですか。その人はあなたの教えを受けて、無事にラージャガハへと至ることができるのではないでしょうか。バラモンよ、いったい何が原因（hetu）であり、何が縁（paccaya）であるのでしょうか。ラージャガハはそこに厳然として存在し、ラージャガハへと通じる道もまた厳然として存在し、あなたもまた導く者として厳然としてそこにおられる、それにもかかわらず——
