そのとき、その人が、その村あるいは町を出てまだ間もない別の人に出会ったとしましょう。その人は、その村あるいは町が安穏であるか、食物が豊かであるか、病が少ないかを尋ねるでしょう。そして相手の人は、その村あるいは町の安穏のこと、食物の豊かなこと、病の少ないことを告げ知らせるでしょう。
スナッカッタよ、あなたはどのように思いますか。その人は、その相手の言葉に耳を傾けようとするでしょうか。注意深く聴こうとするでしょうか。心を集中して理解しようとするでしょうか。その人と親しく交わり、その言葉に喜びを見出すでしょうか」
「そのとおりでございます、尊師よ」
「スナッカッタよ、まさにそのように、ある者が世俗の楽しみ（欲楽）に心を向けているとき、その可能性は十分にあるのです――」
