「友よ、私はかつて、波羅夷（はらい）もしくはそれに準ずる重大な罪過を犯したことを覚えております。覚えていないと申しましたのは、軽率な言葉でございました。」
このようにして、悪作治罰（たっさぱーぴやしかー）が行われる。そして、このような悪作治罰によって、いくつかの諍事（あらそいごと）が鎮められるのである。
「尊者よ、あなたは波羅夷もしくはそれに準ずる重大な罪過を犯したことを覚えておられますか。」と問われて、その者はかく答える。「友よ、私はそのような重大な罪過を犯したことを覚えておりません。」と。しかるに、その者がいかに言い逃れようとも——
