このように答える比丘は、自らを高めることなく、他者を貶めることもなく、法（ダンマ）に随順して答えるのであり、正当な論拠をもって反駁され、非難されるような事態に陥ることはない」と。
世尊はこのように説かれた。比丘たちは歓喜し、世尊の御言葉を喜び奉った。
「比丘たちよ、汝らは余についてこのように思っているか。『世尊は慈しみ深く、われらの利益を願っておられる。慈悲（アヌカンパー）をもって法を説いてくださる』と」
「比丘たちよ、汝らはまことにそのように思っているようである。『慈悲をもって法を説いてくださる』と。しかし、『沙門ゴータマは衣（チーヴァラ）のために法を説くのではないか、食（ピンダパータ）のために法を説くのではないか』
