「されば、賢明なる人は、この件につき断固たる結論に達すべきであろう――すなわち、神々（devā）は存在すると」
「しかし、なにゆえゴータマ尊者は、はじめからそのようにお答えにならなかったのでしょうか」
「これは、世間において高く認められていることである――神々は存在すると」
「ゴータマ尊者の精進（padhāna）は、まことに篤実なるものであり、真人（sappurisa）にふさわしきものでありました。それはまさに、阿羅漢（arahant）にして正等覚者（sammāsambuddha）たる方にふさわしきものであります。しかるに、ゴータマ尊者よ、神々は存在するのでしょうか」
「バーラドヴァージャよ、わたしは因（ṭhāna）によって神々のことを知っている」
「しかし、ゴータマ尊者よ、『神々は存在するか』と問われたとき、なにゆえ『バーラドヴァージャよ、わたしは因によってそれを知っている』とお答えになったのでしょうか」
