「その人が、水辺から遠く離れた陸地に置かれた、青々とした樹液を含む丸太に火起こし棒を押し当てて錐もみすれば、火を起こし、熱を生じさせることができるでしょうか」「いいえ、ゴータマ尊者よ、それはできません。なぜならば、ゴータマ尊者よ、それはなお青々とした樹液を含む丸太であるからです――たとえ水辺より遠く離れた陸地に置かれているとしても」
さらにまた、バーラドヴァージャよ、かつて聞いたこともない第三の譬喩が、自然と私の心に浮かびました。
「まさにそのように、バーラドヴァージャよ、いかなる沙門（さもん）あるいは婆羅門（ばらもん）であれ、身（かだら）においても心においても欲楽（よくらく）より離れて住する者、そして彼らが欲楽に対する欲望（カーマッチャンダ）・貪著（とんじゃく）・耽溺（たんでき）・渇愛（かつあい）・情熱を、内なるものとして捨て去り、静め尽くしたる者――」
