中部経典（MN100 §12.10–12.5）
Rāma was like you and you are like Rāma. Come now, reverend! You should lead this community.’ And that is how my spiritual companion Uddaka son of Rāma placed me in the position of a tutor, and honored me with high praise. Then it occurred to me, ‘This teaching doesn’t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. It only leads as far as rebirth in dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.’ Realizing that this teaching was inadequate, I
「ラーマはあなたのごとくあり、あなたはラーマのごとくあります。さあ、友よ、今こそあなたがこの教団を導かれるべきです」と。かくして、バーラドヴァージャよ、わたしの梵行（ぼんぎょう）の友なるラーマの子ウッダカは、わたしを師の位に置き、甚だ高き礼讃をもってわたしを敬ったのである。しかるに、バーラドヴァージャよ、そのときわたしにかくの思いが生じた。「この法（ダンマ）は、厭離（えんり）へと導かず、離欲（りよく）へと導かず、滅尽（めつじん）へと導かず、寂静（じゃくじょう）へと導かず、神通智（じんつうち）へと導かず、正覚（しょうがく）へと導かず、涅槃（ねはん）へと導かない。ただ非想非非想処（ひそうひひそうしょ）への再生に至るのみである」と。かくしてわたしは、この法を不十分なものと見極め、それに満足することなく、その法を離れ去ったのである。
