比丘はよく精進し……梵行（ブラフマチャリヤ）を修め……経典をよく誦習し……
こう説かれたとき、トーデッヤの子なるスッバ青年は、世尊にこう申し上げた。
「いいえ、ゴータマ尊者よ、そうは思いません。」
「それはなぜですか。」
「ゴータマ尊者よ、ナラカーラ村に生まれ育った者は、その村への道をことごとく熟知しているからでございます。」
「しかし、青年よ、ナラカーラ村に生まれ育ったその者であっても、問われたときに答えるのが遅く、ためらうことがあるかもしれません。けれども、如来（タターガタ）は問われたとき、けっして遅滞することも、ためらうこともないのであります。」
