「それならば、慈悲（karuṇā）こそが、功徳を作る第六の基盤（puññakiriyavatthu）ではないでしょうか。」「ゴータマ師よ、その通りです。慈悲こそが、バラモンたちにとって功徳を作る第六の基盤であります。」
たとえば、あるバラモンが大きな祭祀（mahāyañña）を執り行おうとしていたとします。そこへ二人のバラモンが、「かの某バラモンの大祭祀に与ろう」と思いながらやって来ました。そのうちの一人のバラモンの心にこのような思いが起こりました。「ああ、願わくは、食堂における上席も、上等の飲み物も、上等の食事も、ただ自分だけが得られるように。他のバラモンには、食堂における上席も、上等の飲み物も、上等の食事も、得られることのないように」と。
しかし若者（māṇava）よ、他のバラモンが食堂において上席を得、上等の飲み物を得、上等の食事を得るということは、十分に起こり得ることであります。
