「では、青年よ、感覚的欲楽（kāma）を離れ、不善なる諸法（akusalā dhammā）を離れたところに生ずる喜悦（pīti）とは、いかなるものであるか。ここに、青年よ、比丘（bhikkhu）は、まさしく諸々の感覚的欲楽より遠離し、不善なる諸法より遠離して、尋（vitakka）と伺（vicāra）とを有し、遠離より生じたる喜（pīti）と楽（sukha）とを具える初禅（paṭhama-jhāna）に達して、これに住する。青年よ、これこそが、感覚的欲楽を離れ、不善なる諸法を離れたところに生ずる喜悦というものである。
青年よ、かの婆羅門（brāhmaṇa）たちが功徳（puñña）を積み、善（kusala）を成就するためとして説く五つの法（dhamma）のうち、婆羅門たちはいずれの法をもって、功徳を積み善を成就するための、最も大いなる果をもたらすものと説くのであるか。」
