生まれによって定められる標識（リンガ）は、あまねく見られるものであるが、人間においてはそのような区別を見出すことはできない。人間のあいだにおける差異は、ただ慣習（サマンニャー）によって語られるに過ぎない。
かくして人間のあいだには、生まれによって定められる標識は存在しない。髪によっても、頭によっても、耳によっても、眼によっても、口によっても、鼻によっても、唇によっても、眉によっても——
