A fire that burns dependent on logs is reckoned as a log fire. A fire that burns dependent on twigs is reckoned as a twig fire. Suppose someone from a family of aristocrats goes forth from the lay life to homelessness. Relying on the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One they refrain from killing living creatures, stealing, and sex. 薪（まき）を縁として火が燃えるならば、それは「薪の火」と称せられる。小枝を縁として火が燃えるならば、それは「小枝の火」と称せられる。
バラモンよ、たとえ刹帝利（クシャトリヤ）の家に生まれた者であっても、家を出て家なき出家の道に入り、如来（タターガタ）の説き示した法と律（ダンマ・ヴィナヤ）に依って、殺生（サッターナン・パーナーティパーター）を離れ、与えられざるものを取ること（アディンナーダーナ）を離れ、不梵行（アブラフマチャリヤ）を離れ、妄語（ムサーヴァーダ）を離れ、両舌（ピスナヴァーチャー）を離れ、悪口（パルサヴァーチャー）を離れ、綺語（サンパッパラーパ）を離れ、貪り（アビッジャー）なく、瞋恚（ヴィヤーパーダ）なき心を保ち、正見（サンマーディッティ）を具えているならば——
