そのとき、オーパーサーダの婆羅門（バラモン）たちと居士（こじ）たちは、オーパーサーダの町を出て、連れ立って群れをなしながら、北の方へ向かって、神々の森なるサーラ樹の林へと歩みを進めていた。
折しも、婆羅門カンキーは、高床の長屋の上階に退いて、午後の休息をとっていた。彼はオーパーサーダの婆羅門たちと居士たちが、町を出て群れをなし、北の方の神々の森へと向かって行くのを目にした。それを見て、カンキーは執事（しつじ）に言葉をかけた。
「執事よ、いったいどういうわけで、オーパーサーダの婆羅門たちと居士たちは、町を出て連れ立ちながら、北の神々の森へと向かって行くのであろうか。」
「沙門（しゃもん）ゴータマが、多くの僧伽（サンガ）の比丘（びく）たちとともにオーパーサーダに到着され、北の神々の森に滞在しておられます。かの方は——」
