中部経典（MN94 §15.7–16.16）
After some time they give up a large or small fortune, and a large or small family circle. They shave off hair and beard, dress in ocher robes, and go forth from the lay life to homelessness. Once they’ve gone forth, they take up the training and livelihood of the mendicants. They give up killing living creatures, renouncing the rod and the sword. やがて彼は、多からず少なからぬ財産を捨て、多からず少なからぬ親族の絆を捨て、髪と髭を剃り落とし、黄褐色の衣（袈裟）をまとい、在家の生活を離れて出家（パッバジター）し、遍歴の行者となる。かくして出家した彼は、比丘たちの学処（シッカー）と生活の規範を身につけ、次のように歩む。
殺生（パーナーティパーター）を断ち、殺生より離れ、杖を置き、刀を置いて、慎み深く慈愛に満ち、あらゆる生きとし生けるものの利益を憐れみながら住する。
偸盗（アディンナーダーナ）を断ち、偸盗より離れ、与えられたものだけを受け取り、与えられたものだけを期待し、清らかな心で（アテーネーナ・スチ）自らを保つ。
