“Once upon a time, Assalāyana, seven brahmin seers settled in leaf huts in a wilderness region. They had the following harmful misconception: ‘Be ashes, lowlife! Be ashes, lowlife!’ But the more the seers cursed him, the more attractive, good-looking, and lovely Devala the Dark became. Then those brahmin seers said, ‘Our fervor is in vain! 「アッサラーヤナよ、むかし、七人のバラモンの仙人（ブラーフマナ・イシ）たちが、荒野の地において木の葉の庵に住まいを定めたことがあった。彼らにかくのごときよこしまな見解（ミッチャー・ディッティ）が生じた。『灰になれ、賤しき者よ。灰になれ、賤しき者よ』と。
しかるに、アッサラーヤナよ、七人のバラモンの仙人たちが暗黒の仙人デーヴァラ（アシタ・デーヴァラ・イシ）を呪えば呪うほど、デーヴァラはいよいよ美しく、いよいよ見目麗しく、いよいよ人の目を喜ばせるものとなっていった。
そこで、アッサラーヤナよ、七人のバラモンの仙人たちはこのように思った。『まことに、われらの苦行（タパ）は空しく、梵行（ブラフマチャリヤ）は実りなきものとなってしまった。かつてわれらが何者かを呪い、汝よ灰になれと言えば、その者は灰となった。しかるに、この者を呪えば呪うほど、いよいよ美しく……』」
