When he said this, Assalāyana sat silent, dismayed, shoulders drooping, downcast, depressed, with nothing to say. Knowing this, the Buddha said to him: So he did up his hair and beard, dressed in magenta robes, put on his lined sandals, grasped a golden staff, and appeared in the courtyard of the seven brahmin seers. このように言われると、アッサラーヤナ青年は沈黙し、うろたえ、肩を落とし、うつむき、沈み込んで、言葉を返すことができないまま座っていた。世尊はアッサラーヤナ青年がそのように沈黙し、うろたえ、肩を落とし、うつむき、沈み込んで、言葉を返せずにいることを知り、アッサラーヤナ青年にこう仰せになった。
「アッサラーヤナよ、かつてアシタ・デーヴァラ（Asita Devala）という仙人がおられた。その方は髪と髭を整え、赤紫色（まんじゅしゃげいろ）の衣をまとい、縁飾りのある草履を履き、黄金の杖を手に取り、七人のバラモンの仙人たちの庭前に姿を現された。アッサラーヤナよ、アシタ・デーヴァラ仙人はその庭をあちこち歩き回りながら、『ああ、バラモンの仙人たちはどこへ行かれたのか。ああ、バラモンの仙人たちはどこへ行かれたのか』と呼ばわった。するとバラモンの仙人たちは、『この方はどなたであろうか——』」
