With the ending of the five lower fetters, he’s been reborn spontaneously and will become extinguished there, not liable to return from that world.” That is what the Buddha said. 「五つの下分結（かぶんけつ）を滅し尽くすことによって、かの梵天行者ブラーフマーユは化生（けしょう）の身を受け、その彼方において般涅槃（はつねはん）し、もはやその世界より還ることなき者となるであろう」と。
これこそ世尊の説かれたことであった。かの比丘（びく）たちは心に喜びを抱き、世尊の御言葉を歓んで受け入れた。
さて、その頃、バラモンのブラーフマーユには、ウッタラという名の弟子があった。かれは三ヴェーダに通じ、ニガンドゥおよびケートゥバとともに、語義の解説・語根の分析、さらには第五のヴェーダたる古伝承（イティハーサ）をも究め、語句の解釈、文法、また世間における大人相（だいにんそう）の観察においても何ら欠けるところがなかった。
そこでバラモンのブラーフマーユは、弟子のウッタラにかく告げた。「さあ、ウッタラよ、ヴィデーハの地に沙門ゴータマがおられると聞く。そなたはかの沙門ゴータマのもとへ赴き、その相好（そうごう）が……」
