Suppose a person took dry teak wood and lit a fire and produced heat. Then another person did the same using sāl wood, another used mango wood, “What the Buddha says appears reasonable. But sir, do gods survive?” “But what exactly are you asking?” “Whether those gods come back to this place or not.” “Those gods who are afflicted come back to this place, but those who are unafflicted do not come back.” When he said this, General Viḍūḍabha said to the Buddha, As far as the dominion of King Pasenad
たとえば、ある人が乾いたチーク材を取り、火を起こして熱を生じさせたとする。また別の人がサーラ材を取り、同じく火を起こして熱を生じさせたとする。さらに別の人がマンゴー材を取り、火を起こして熱を生じさせたとする。
「世尊の仰せは道理にかなっているように思われます。しかし世尊よ、神々（デーヴァ）は存在するのでしょうか」
「大王よ、そなたは何をもってそのように問うのか」
「世尊よ、それら神々がふたたびこの世に還ってくるのか、あるいは還ってこないのか、ということでございます」
「大王よ、煩悩（āsava）に縛られた神々はふたたびこの世に還ってくる。しかし煩悩を離れた神々は還ってくることがない」
世尊がこのように説かれたとき、ヴィドゥーダバ将軍は世尊に向かって申し上げた。
「パセーナディ王の治める国土の及ぶかぎり……」
