バラモンよ、愛するものより憂い・悲しみ・苦しみ・嘆き・絶望（ソーカ・パリデーヴァ・ドゥッカ・ドーマナッサ・ウパーヤーサ）の生ずることは、また次のような縁によっても知られるべきである。
むかし、このサーヴァッティーの町において、ある女人の母が世を去った。その死によって彼女は正気を失い、心乱れて、街から街へ、辻から辻へとさまよい歩きながら、こう叫び続けた。
「わが母をご覧になりましたか。わが母をご覧になりましたか」と。
バラモンよ、かくのごとき縁によっても、愛するもの（ピヤ）より憂い・悲しみ・苦しみ・嘆き・絶望の生ずることは知られるべきである。
