「尊者よ、いったい誰がそのようなことを考えられましょうか。愛しき者こそは、まさに喜びと楽しみの源なのでございます。」
かくて彼の長者は、世尊の御言葉を喜ばず、退けて、座より立ち上がり、去っていった。
「長者よ、汝は自らの心（チッタ）において安定せぬ者の根（インドリヤ）を持っておる。汝の根には乱れが生じておる。」
「尊者よ、どうして私の根に乱れが生じずにおられましょうか。尊者よ、私のただ一人の、愛しく慕わしいわが子が、命を終えたのでございます。その子の死より以来、仕事をする気も起こらず、食事も喉を通りませぬ。私は荼毘（だび）の場へと赴いては泣き叫ぶのでございます――『わが子よ、どこにいるのか』と。」
